This plan stays entirely in the Kathmandu valley for four nights, which is the only way to see its three royal cities — Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur — and the big temples without rushing. It is ideal if you fly into Kathmandu or have already seen Pokhara on an earlier trip.

Kathmandu itinerary, day by day

Day 1 – Arrive Kathmandu, Thamel evening

Airport or road arrival and hotel check-in. The Garden of Dreams and Thamel's lanes make an easy first evening.

Day 2 – Pashupatinath and Boudhanath

Morning at Pashupatinath on the Bagmati river and an evening return for the aarti. In between, the white dome of Boudhanath and its rooftop cafés.

Day 3 – Swayambhunath and Kathmandu Durbar Square

Climb (or drive) to Swayambhunath above the city, then the old royal palace square, Kumari Ghar and Asan market.

Day 4 – Patan and Bhaktapur

Patan's Krishna Mandir and the Patan Museum in the morning, Bhaktapur's Nyatapola temple, potters' square and juju dhau in the afternoon.

Day 5 – Chandragiri cable car and departure

The cable car to Chandragiri hill for a final mountain view, weather permitting, then transfer to the airport or the road back to the border.
