Why combine Shimla and Manali

Shimla and Manali are only about 250 km apart but feel completely different. Shimla is a colonial ridge town of churches, a car-free Mall and forest walks; Manali is a river valley of apple orchards, snow points and adventure sports. Together they make the classic first Himachal holiday.

The route: most plans start at Chandigarh or Kalka, climb to Shimla in about three hours, then cross to Manali through Bilaspur, Mandi and the Kullu valley — a full scenic day. The Kalka–Shimla toy train is an optional first-day upgrade.

How many days? Five nights is the comfortable minimum: two in Shimla, three in Manali. Add Dharamshala and Dalhousie for a 8–9 night Himachal circuit.
