Chitwan National Park, a UNESCO site in Nepal's southern lowlands, is home to one-horned rhinos, gharial crocodiles, sloth bears and Bengal tigers. This 3 nights / 4 days plan from Gorakhpur stays at Sauraha on the park edge and includes a canoe ride, a jeep safari and a walk in a Tharu village.

Sauraha is about four hours from the Sonauli border, so it is the easiest wildlife trip in Nepal from eastern UP and Bihar. Rhino sightings are most likely from October to March when the grass is cut low.

Chitwan itinerary, day by day

1

Day 1 – Gorakhpur to Sauraha

Drive through Sonauli and Butwal along the East–West Highway. Evening at the Rapti riverbank and a Tharu stick-dance show.

Day 2 – Canoe ride and jeep safari

A dugout canoe at sunrise, then a jungle walk with a naturalist and an afternoon jeep safari for rhinos and deer.

Day 3 – Tharu village and elephant breeding centre

Cycle to a Tharu village, visit the elephant breeding centre and spend a slow afternoon at Bis Hajar Tal wetlands or the resort pool.

Day 4 – Return to Gorakhpur

After breakfast, the drive back to the border and Gorakhpur.
